South Texas - Nilgai Antelope
With access to three pastures totaling roughly 30,000 acres of this deep South Texas ranch,
we consider this hunt to be one of the "absolute best" opportunities available to take an 8"
plus trophy Bull Nilgai.
Nilgai, a native antelope of India, were introduced to South Texas
in the early 1930's on the King Ranch. Their range has increased to include the counties of
Brooks, Cameron, Hidalgo, Kleberg, Kenedy and Willacy, and is steadily expanding into
surrounding areas as well.
Commonly called "Blue bulls" due to color variations of the coat, adult males will typically
field-dress from 450 to 500 pounds, with mature cows averaging 250-350 pounds field-dressed.
With it's straight black horns, broad shoulders, throat tuft and elongated face, the Nilgai makes a
stunning mount. While the bulls are good eating, there is no finer table fare than a cow Nilgai.
These animals offer a challenge to any hunter as they are an extremely tough and elusive quarry.
Magnum scope-sighted rifles in .300 caliber or greater are recommended, as are cartridges topped
with heavy, premium bullets.
We prefer to hunt Nilgai in the cooler months between November and April, which normally covers the "rut".
During this time of year there is usually less vegetation and less chance of hair slippage if mounting the animal.
The main hunting method is safari-style drive, glass, spot and stalk.
Lodging is in very comfortable bungalows with individual bathrooms.
There is a spacious common dining area with fireplace, and a large outdoor porch.
Cuisine is primarily Tex-Mex style.
Trophy Bull hunt: $2350.
Non-hunters welcome at $200/day.
